Be smart, play cunning, and become versed in craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
