Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
