Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
