Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
