Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
