Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
