Be brilliant, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
