Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
