Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
