Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
