Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
