Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
