Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
