Be cunning, play clever, and learn how to play craps the ideal way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
