Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
