Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
