Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
