Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
